Intriguing bit from The Wall Street Journal’s Scott Patterson yesterday on hedge funds using artificial intelligence or machine learning techniques to pick stocks.

Patterson focuses on one firm in particular, Rebellion Research (you’ve got to love the names; the founder’s dad ran Brave Warrior Advisors and was a partner at Chieftain Capital Management), and its computer program called “Star,” which has beaten the S&P 500 by 10% a year since it came on line in 2007.
